The work
"In the land of the Lin there is a rare beast, large as a tiger, of five colours complete, with a tail longer than its body; its name is Zouyu, and to ride it is to travel a thousand li in a day." Every beast in the set carries its line from the Classic on the base.

The beasts are drawn from the text, not from later paintings — which is why they look like nothing you have seen and exactly like what was written.
